He comes back to do the one thing grief and paperwork can't take from him: host Christmas, a proper réveillon cooked by the foreigner for the village that's been quietly feeding him since spring — a small girl named Noëlle among them, and someone who keeps leaving firewood split to the exact size of his stove and never signs for it. A standalone novella set between Books One and Two: warmer and quieter than the novel, and about the specific terror of being taken in.
